To make it happen, the power from your engine needs to travel through the transmission and reach both front and rear driveshaft. A transfer case is designed to make it happen. It is a gear train assembly that can split the engine power between the rear and front wheels, increase torque when higher power is preferred over speed, or disengage the four-wheel drive sending power only to the rear or only to the front wheels.

For high-speed racing applications, the chain drive system is preferred for linking front and rear driveshafts. It is much lighter than its gear counterparts which are usually used in heavy-duty trucks carrying extreme loads. If you feel that the chain in your transfer case becomes too loud, inspect it and check if it is stretched or has kinks. If so, it needs to be replaced. All the moving components inside your transfer case need to be constantly lubricated, so special oil is added to the system. The lubricant is distributed throughout the assembly being thrown by the chain.

The set of reduction gears or planetary gear assembly is used to ensure a low-speed, high-torque four-wheel driving mode.
