Both manual and automatic racing transmissions have many rotating shafts, gears, bearings, clutch packs, and other moving parts that need to be constantly lubricated. It reduces friction and thus wear and tear of metal parts prolonging their service life. In automatic gearboxes, the hydraulic fluid also carries out the function of a lubricant. To keep oil inside the assembly, seals and gaskets are used. Over time, rubber seals may harden and become brittle, which mean they may crack and cause leaks. Such problems are more common in the case of automatic transmissions since the oil inside is pressurized by the pump.
If you notice that red fluid is dripping from underneath your car, it is time to inspect and replace seals and gaskets on your transmission. You have to do it as soon as you can because otherwise, your gearbox may not survive your next race. First of all, make sure that the oil pan of your gearbox is intact. If you use your race car in rally competitions or like aggressive driving on rough terrain with lots of dangerous obstacles, you could easily crack the pan or even the transmission case on some sharp-edged rock. Make sure that seals are not broken.
Racing transmission seals and gaskets may suffer from accelerated wear due to exposure to high temperatures. More often than not, the fluid is dripping from seals on either an input or output shaft. Also, when looking for leakage, check out gaskets and O-rings on the valve body, oil pan, shifter housing, pump housing, and seals on the torque converter, drain plug, speedometer, and so on. It is strongly recommended to replace all seals and gaskets every time you rebuild your transmission before some serious race. Visit our store to find a huge assortment of all of the needed components to perform the job.
