The operation of a modern automatic transmission is regulated by an electronic control unit that receives data from numerous sensors and an engine control unit. The signals sent by the transmission control unit activate shift, pressure control solenoids, and other devices to ensure timely and most optimal gear shifts. Many modern transmissions utilize solenoids to lock clutches in torque converters when it is appropriate. This allows for better fuel economy since a torque converter rotates with the crankshaft without wasting engine power on torque multiplication. Solenoids open and close valves regulating the flow of hydraulic fluid into the valve body to pressurize clutches and brakes that change gears.

If the “check engine” light on your instrument panel is on, and your gearbox is struggling to stay in gear, shifts too roughly, erratically, or with delays, it is time to inspect and replace your solenoid pack. Your solenoids may fail due to frequent temperature changes or simply wear out over time resulting in their sticking. A bad shift solenoid may lead to transmission slippage since it cannot provide enough fluid pressure to activate the needed gear. When the transmission control module detects some problem with solenoids, sensors, or switches, it may activate a special safety mode limiting the vehicle speed allowing you to get home or to the nearest shop.

Sometimes, the problem may lie in a faulty sensor. Sensors collect and deliver data to the transmission and engine control modules. This information is vital for efficient, trouble-free operation of the whole powertrain system. There are sensors that measure the vehicle’s speed, differential speed, input and output shaft RPMs, throttle position, transmission oil temperature, and more. The brake switch is activated when the brake pedal is depressed to send the signal and release the torque converter clutch. Browse our extensive collection of racing transmission solenoids, sensors, switches and control units to find all components that you may need to ensure the trouble-free operation of your high-performance gearbox.
