Racing Turbocharger Boost Management

Invented far back at the beginning of the previous century, a turbocharger has gradually become the most popular and efficient forced induction system used in automobiles. Many famous carmakers prefer turbocharged motors to their naturally aspirated counterparts, and there are several strong reasons for that. Higher power and torque in a wide RPM range are some of the main benefits, and of course, such advantages could not go unnoticed in the racing world. However, turbocharging has its own tricks and requires the use of some specific smart systems to remain utterly efficient. Boost controllers, the devices meant to manage the amount of boost, are among them.

In a nutshell, a boost controller regulates the boost by changing pressure acting on the wastegate. This way, you can make this valve stay closed when you need, even when the boost pressure exceeds the threshold set for a standard wastegate actuator. As a result, the turbine is forced to give a higher boost, and you get higher torque and quicker engine response while shifting gears or manipulating the gas pedal at different RPM, which can be especially vital on the track. Properly adjusted, this technology keeps safety on a decent level, as a wastegate still works although its peak actually changes from, say, 7 psi to 10 psi.

There are manual and electronic boost controllers. The former are relatively inexpensive and simple. The latter require more technical knowledge for the right installation but provide much more settings and additional features such as visualization on the gauges, manual switch, live boost tuning, and automatic activation upon some events such as gear change, reaching certain RPM, and so on.
