Racing Exhaust Brake & Air Shutdown Valves

In gasoline motors, engine braking is easy to perform just by releasing the gas pedal – the throttle choke will be closed, and most of air and, correspondingly, fuel will not enter the combustion chamber. Diesels operate in a different way – they accelerate or decelerate thanks to changed fuel supply, while air flow is not restricted, except for the cases with the EGR or similar systems using a special choke. So, to improve engine braking, diesel motors need a special mechanism; usually, it's either a Jake brake or an exhaust brake. In a nutshell, the former is a system that releases the air already compressed inside the cylinders. The latter is a special valve that closes the exhaust system, increasing back pressure and slowing down pistons' movements.

In practice, the installation of the exhaust brake is quite beneficial for diesel trucks, pickups, or SUVs. It helps to reduce the load on their wheel brakes and increase braking performance on slopes. Given that diesels usually have a much higher compression than gasoline engines, significant back pressure created by a closed engine brake produces a notable effect. In turn, it means improved safety and shorter stopping distances, especially if the vehicle is heavily loaded or heavy in itself. Relying on engine capabilities for braking, you make sure that the standard brakes are not so heavily loaded to be better prepared for emergency braking situations.
