When it comes to replacing an old or poorly performing engine in your race car, you can either build your own motor or go with a crate engine. If you decide to create the engine yourself, you may customize it the way you want, however you should take all specifications into account to get the performance you crave. Plus, this process is rather time-consuming and expensive. As for crate engines, they are fully assembled motors that come ready to install. Everything you need to do is to mount the fuel system, exhausts, and some other accessories, and you’re ready to go. Crate engines are considered to be an economical solution compared to custom engine builds.
On our website, you’ll find various types of crate engines such as short block, long block and turnkey. Some people think that a short block is smaller than a long one, but that’s not true. They are of the same size, but differ in the quantity of components they include. A short block features just several parts like crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons. Since it is not a complete system, it will take time to assemble the parts. A long block engine is actually a short block plus a camshaft, valve train, and cylinder head; it is considered a complete engine, thus it requires less time to build than its short counterpart.
The third type is turnkey, which is a full assembly that comes ready to mount right out of the box. The turnkey includes all the components of the long block, as well as spark plugs, sensors, and wiring. To sum up, each type has its pros and cons. For example, the short block costs less than the long one and the turnkey, however, you will need to buy additional parts to complete the assembly. On the other hand, long block and turnkey motors usually come with longer warranties, which can save you a lot of money in the long run.
