Racing water filters may have Supplemental Coolant Additives (SCAs) to maintain a cooling system charged. “Blank” water filters including zero SCAs are intended for use when a system is overcharged, so there no need for extra SCAs.

These filters are available in two types: cartridge and spin-on. The latter is the most common type. The anatomy of a spin-on coolant filter is a pleated cellulose or full synthetic filter media that captures and removes particles. The centertube provides support to the media pack. At each media’s end, there are bottom end caps that help prevent particles from by-passing the media. The threaded baseplate allows you to mount your coolant filter to its mounting base. Plus, it allows coolant to flow into and out of the filter. The compression spring's job is to consistently maintain pressure on the media pack needed to seal the back of the baseplate. The filter canister holds everything in and the plastic insulator prevents the spring from directly contacting the canister. SCA-charged racing coolant filters will also have SCA pellets to put additional chemicals into the coolant itself to maintain its chemical balance.
