The heart and brains of the engine cooling system, a thermostat will keep your ride’s inner heart cool and running within a safe range by varying the amount of coolant flow to the radiator. The thermostat regulates when coolant is needed in your race car’s hot-running engine to cool it down to that temperature. It restricts the coolant flow to the radiator until it warms up to the right operating temperature. As it gets hotter, the thermostat opens, allowing coolant to flow through to the radiator to be cooled until it reaches normal operating temperature. A standard thermostat can’t cope with tremendous amounts of heat generated by high-compression and forced induction engines when revved at their max, while a racing thermostat can.
