Regulations may stipulate that reflectors have to be positioned so many inches from the ground, and be clearly visible from the sides of the vehicle. If a particular vehicle’s styling design doesn’t allow the vehicle to meet standards with reflectors incorporated into tail lights, parking lights, side marker lights, etc., then separate reflectors may be necessary. Reflectors at the front end of the vehicle are amber and those at the rear must be red. Whether they are part of a light or detached, car makers generally try to integrate reflectors into the overall vehicle design.

Plastic lamp lenses and reflectors are subject to weathering and exposure to UV rays, which can make them faded and opaque and reduce their reflective capabilities. They can also become scratched, cracked and even break from impacts and contact with debris, which of course can also seriously impair light reflection. While not as serious as a non-functioning electric light, non-functional reflectors can diminish driving safety. A broken or missing reflector could even result in your being pulled over and ticketed by law enforcement.
