Probably the earliest type of bumper moldings were the chrome steel bumper guards that began appearing on cars in the 1930s and had their heyday in the 1950s. The 50s was the era of chrome excess, and these guards that bolted on and extended vertically or outward from the bumper were extensions of the theme, although they did provide some protection. Bumper guards were often one of the methods used to distinguish higher trim levels and they could also be optional equipment. Bumper overriders were similar to bumper guards, but usually appeared on European and Japanese import chrome bumpers.

With the advent of 5-mph bumper regulations in the 1970s bumper moldings became more purposeful and less ornamental. Many cars, especially American models, still had chrome bumpers, but these were now positioned further from the body to provide greater protection. The first line of defense on these bumpers was often rubber moldings that extended the length of the bumper. Vertical bumper guards were also faced with rubber, or they were made of solid rubber. Gradually these regulation mandated bumpers morphed into the plastic covered bumpers of today. Although moldings continued to provide an additional layer of protection, they were once again called upon to provide an element of style to designs that would otherwise be bland and unappealing.

Plastic bumper covers allow stylists to create sleek, sculpted, and aerodynamic body shapes, but during the 1980s and 1990s this was sometimes taken to the extreme, and the bumpers and sheet metal body on some models became vast, uninterrupted monotone expanses that lacked visual interest. These vehicles were often derided as “jelly bean” cars. More creative vehicle stylists found that carefully placed moldings and trim, especially in contrasting tones like black or chrome, could result in vehicle designs that were interesting and expressive as well as aerodynamic.
