In fact, all of them are controlled by electronics, but the second and third types don't use a distributor to send electrical impulses to the combustion chambers. The module can be placed in any suitable part of the engine bay and, like a traditional distributor, it requires ignition wires to provide each plug with the current.

As for the coil-on-plug system, it features an individual coil for each cylinder, which is located over the plug and connects with it through a special spark plug boot. But although this solution is considered the most reliable, issues with a faulty coil or boot are not that rare.
