The Toyota Corolla may not be the most powerful and tech-packed compact car out there, but its comfort, economy, and reliability make it a long-time bestseller. So when Toyota releases the new generation of a nameplate this venerable, it’s definitely worth paying attention. Unveiled at a media event in California, the redesigned 2020 Corolla sedan arrived hot on the heels of its hatchback sibling which was revealed earlier this year. It represents the twelfth generation of Toyota’s top-selling compact car, refreshed from the ground up. The new Corolla retains its 106.3-inch wheelbase but unlike the outgoing MC-underpinned car, both sedan and hatchback are now based on the TNGA platform that also forms the basis for all of the latest Toyota models. The new architecture offers higher torsional rigidity and lower center of gravity that translate into better handling. The 2020 Toyota Corolla gets a sportier look and a host of interior improvements, along with more power and the first-ever hybrid model.
For 2020, five trim grades and two engine options are available. The base L, more feature-packed LE, and mid-range XLE are powered by a retuned version of a 1.8-liter I4 found in the outgoing Corolla. This time, it makes 139 hp versus the old car’s 132 hp. Both sporty trim levels, the XSE and SE, get a new 2.0-liter I4 shared with the Hatchback, which packs 169 hp. The majority of models feature a CVT, but enthusiasts seeking more driving thrills can choose a 6-speed manual transmission with rev-matching. The torsion beam rear suspension of the predecessor is replaced with a more advanced multi-link setup that is teamed with MacPherson struts in front. The Corolla Hybrid offers the same underpinnings as the Prius. Its electrified powertrain includes the above-mentioned 1.8-liter unit mated to a pair of electric motors and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack, which together produce 121 hp and consume over 50 mpg in a combined cycle. The batteries are placed under the rear seats, allowing for the same interior and cargo space as that of regular Corollas. The energy of regenerative braking helps charge the pack, and the car can run on pure electricity for some short distances given a decent amount of juice.
The front fascia is all new, offering a cleaner, more aggressive design. Visually, the 12th-generation Corolla is lower, wider, and more angular than before. There’s a more massive grille and slim, sharp-angled LED headlights. The profile is basically the same, while the rear end is entirely reshaped and blessed with LED tail lights regardless of the trim level. Sporty XSE and SE models gained a few unique 2020 Toyota Corolla accessories, including a trunk spoiler, different grille, and big 18-inch wheels. The Nightshade Edition package adds plenty of black accents to both sedan and hatchback, with the latter also gaining more tech (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included) and more space in the trunk by deleting a spare tire.
Step inside and you’ll notice a revamped center stack, with a 7.0’’ or 8.0’’ touchscreen sitting at the top of it. The cabin is more minimalist and is lined with premium-look materials, including several two-tone leather upholstery options. It also provides a quieter ride thanks to quieter drivetrain operation and more noise-suppressing materials used. A variety of safety technologies are offered as standard, including the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and Star Safety System, with everything from vehicle stability control to lane-departure alert making their way to all Corollas.
The new-generation Corolla is more powerful and tech-packed than ever. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be further improved. We have all 2020 Toyota Corolla accessories and parts for performance and styling upgrades. This car offers proven reliability and is known to age well. Although, with time and higher miles, some of its components will require replacements. That’s when you will benefit from our 2020 Toyota Corolla parts that offer a perfect fit and OE-quality performance at a reasonable price.
Want to make your 2020 Toyota Corolla one of a kind, keep it running at its peak, or turn it into a high-powered beast? Our vast selection of premium accessories and parts ticks all the boxes.
