The world's best-selling automotive nameplate, the Toyota Corolla has long been known as an affordable economy car for the masses. It hasn't been associated with sportiness and diving fun, but with the introduction of the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback at the 2018 New York Auto Show, things have changed. For this year, the Corolla Hatchback replaces the previous Corolla iM nameplate and enters its second generation, and it has a lot to offer together with a nomenclature change. There is a new platform, new powertrain with the available manual transmission, and plenty of tech, all wrapped up in a more stylish, sharper-looking package.

Both hatchback and sedan are underpinned by Toyota's TNGA platform (Toyota New Global Architecture). The new chassis allows for a lower center of gravity and is 60% more rigid than that of the outgoing iM, according to the manufacturer. This helps make the new car more fun to drive. 2019 Toyota Corolla parts of the body became lighter thanks to the use of aluminum (for the auto's hood) and plastic (for trunk panels). Power comes from a quieter, more potent, and more efficient 2.0-liter Dynamic Force I4 that replaces the previous 1.8-liter four on a Hatchback. Two gearbox options are offered, a 10-speed CVT automatic and a 6-speed IMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission). The former features the launch gear for the first time in a CVT-equipped passenger car, while the latter is an all-new option specifically developed to provide a smooth, responsive shift for a fun-to-drive feel. No hybrid versions are currently planned for the North American market.

Both trim levels available at launch offer alloy wheels – 16-inch ones for the SE and 18-inchers for the XSE. The new car is a lower, wider, and longer than the outgoing one and has a 1.5-inch-longer wheelbase, resulting in a more prominent stance and more interior room. 2019 Toyota Corolla accessories and parts of the interior create a minimalist design, yet generously bolstered front seats hint at a sporty theme. All versions have a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The infotainment system offers an 8” touchscreen for interaction and supports Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Wi-Fi Connect. Android Auto is missing for this year. Other standard features include keyless ignition, USB ports, and automatic climate control. As for safety tech, all 2019 Corolla models come with Toyota's Safety Sense that includes cruise control, lane departure and keeping aids, automatic highbeams, and pre-collision system (automatic braking) with pedestrian detection.
