The Volvo V70 went on sale in 1997 and came as a mid-size five-door estate/wagon. Being similar to its predecessor, Volvo V70 was a successful facelift though. It was also much alike with saloons, the S70, S60, S80 and the XC 70, the crossover. The updated Volvo 850 (the V70 didn't really change much) featured refreshed front-end styling, a streamline control layout and a little softer suspension settings. The square edges were replaced by rounded corners, which were specific to the late 1990s style trends. Concerning the engines, they were the same as the 850 had (for base model and mid-level GLT trim). The output in R models was increased to 246 hp and T5 produced 236 hp. The new V70 XC version premiered in 1998 with a turbocharged 2,4-liter engine. It also boasted an increased ground clearance, off-road styling cues, and skid plates.
In 2001, the second generation Volvo V70 was introduced, which was based on Volvo P2 platform. It was available as front, or all-wheel drive with five-speed automatic transmission. The V70 XC, AWD off-road version was renamed to XC70. The model is larger than the previous generation with increases in the wheelbase (108,5 inches and 108,8 inches for XC70), the height (58,7 inches and 61,5 inches for XC70), the width (71 inches and 73,2 inches for XC70), and overall length (185,4 inches and 186,3 inches for XC70). The new V70 featured swept-back, hunkered-down styling and more powerful engines. The 2,5 litre light-pressure turbo straight-five engine and the T5 2,4 litre high-pressure turbo straight-five engines are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.
Third generation Volvo V70 premiered on 2 February 2007. Based on the Ford EUCD platform, the V70 and XC70 AWD models have a 3,2 liter straight-six engine with the output of 238 hp. The upgrade to comfort is the orthopedic design of the front seats and the rear bench. The upgrades audio include a high-end audio system, Dolby Pro-Logic systems, and sub-woofers. As for safety features: driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags are standard with WHIPS whiplash prevention system on the front seats. BLIS blind-spot sensor system is standard on all models along with Dynamic Stability and Traction Control. Also common to Volvo are its traditional auto parts, daytime running lights. In 2007 the V70 received 34 of 37 total points in EuroNCAP's evaluation. The V70 will no longer appear in 2011, substituted by the XC70 model.
The Volvo V70 gets attention wherever it is seen on looks alone. But that's not the whole story. Thanks to a deceptively comfortable cabin along with a nice jump in performance of its parts, the Volvo V70 also scores high marks for its overall drivability. In a segment where most other models seem to blend in with each other, this is one ride that stands on its own.
