Launched in 1968, the 164 series became Volvo’s first entry into the mid-size upper-trim market segment after the PV 60 was dropped in 1950. Designed primarily to compete with German premium sedans such as the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz 250, the 164 was equipped with a 3.0L B30 I6 engine rated at 130-160 horsepower, depending on the fuel supply system installed (both, carbureted and fuel-injected versions were available). Mated to a 4-speed manual transmission, the fuel-injected version was able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in only 8.7 sec, which was considered rather impressive as for the vehicle with a curb weight of 3,200 lb. The 164 series was marketed until 1975, when the 264 replaced it.
