The North American market sales of the Toyota Van began for the 1984 model year. Its design was shared with the MasterAce Surf. A 2.0L 87-hp engine was offered in the beginning, but was later on replaced in favor of a 2.2L 102 hp engine. Rear-wheel drive models were marketed in the U.S. beginning in 1983 to 1989, while four-wheel drive vehicles were offered from 1987 to 1989. Toyota's marketing campaign was referring to the DLX and LE trim level passenger vans as the "Wonderwagon", and the CRG trim was known as the "Cargo Van". Deluxe and Limited Edition models were marketed as well.
