At high speeds a spoiler provides downforce at the rear of a car, and in some cases it may even improve aerodynamics, depending on the shape of the car. The distance between the rear edge of the roof and the back end is very steep on some cars, disrupting airflow and increasing drag. This distance can, in effect, be lengthened or the slope made gentler by a properly designed spoiler, which will prevent airflow separation and reduce drag.
