The story of the Saturn S-Series began in 1991 – it was a pioneer model in the Saturn family. It was created as a compact car and during the period of its presence in the market three generations of the model were introduced to customers. The first generation offered three options of body style: two-door coupe, four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. Both manual and automatic transmission was available (four-speed or five speed). It was possible to choose one of the following 1.9L gasoline engines: LK0, L24 or LL0. The second generation offered the same engines except the LK0, and transmission variations remained the same. The model line was extended with a three-door coupe.

The third generation came with almost no changes, but a two-door coupe was removed from the line. The S-Series was also used as a rally race vehicle.
