The cooling system absorbs the heat and then pushes it away via the radiator, which acts as a heat exchanger, transferring heat from the engine coolant flowing through it to the air blowing through it. The typical radiator has a central core of fins and tubes, with an inlet tank on one side and an outlet tank on the other. Most radiators have aluminum cores with plastic or aluminum tanks, but there are also copper/brass radiators. The radiator is mounted at the front of the vehicle where it is exposed to airflow through the grille. Coolant flows from the engine and through the core tubes, where the fins absorb the heat and transfer it to the air. The quicker the fins conduct the heat from the tubes and push it away, the more efficiently the system operates.

The most common type of radiator failure is a leak. Small leaks can be patched by brazing, soldering or welding, and flushing the cooling system can remove deposits and sediment, but for the most effective repair, the radiator should be replaced. Performance radiators are an upgrade over factory units in several ways. They’re constructed from lightweight aluminum, and although aluminum is used for the majority of today’s OE radiators, they often have plastic tanks, which can leak. Our aluminum radiators have aluminum tanks brazed or welded to the core. And while copper has better thermal conductivity, it’s not as strong as aluminum, so copper radiators have to be made thicker and heavier, which negates the material’s heat conducting capabilities.

In addition to superior materials our performance radiators incorporate advanced design gained from knowledge of thermal and fluid dynamics. While specific features will vary according to radiator application, in general performance radiators have larger and/or more tubes than factory radiators to increase coolant flow, along with greater fin density to increase the surface area to which coolant and air are exposed, which results in better heat transfer and a cooler running engine. We offer both crossflow and downflow radiators in direct fit versions that will bolt on in place of your OE radiator, as well as universal radiators for custom applications.

Our direct fit performance radiators will substantially improve cooling, and come with OE size inlets and outlets in the original factory locations, and mounting brackets that provide a hassle-free installation. When even greater cooling capability is needed, direct fit radiators with larger cores are available for some applications, but may require slight modifications for mounting. Our universal radiators are ideal for street rods, custom cars, and race cars, and we offer radiators designed specifically for drag racing and circle track. Many of our radiators are available as combos that include one or two electric cooling fans and all the necessary mounting hardware.
