To be the first crossing the finish line, the racer needs not only a huge amount of power under the hood but also the ability to control it. As the part of the steering system that allows the driver to change vehicle direction, a steering linkage connects the gearbox or steering gear to the front wheels. It consists of rods and links that vary depending on whether the gearbox w/a Pitman arm or the rack & pinion steering gear is installed in your car. The former is mostly used on heavy vehicles, while the latter is installed in the majority of modern cars.

Steering linkages are also available in several types to meet various customers’ needs and requirements. Today, there are three most often used types, each of which has its own advantages and drawbacks. Thus, the rack and pinion linkage features a simple design which allows for making every repair and maintenance job easier and faster. This mechanism provides precise geometry for excellent handling but has a low carrying capacity. Those vehicles equipped with a steering gearbox typically feature either a parallel or a Haltenberger linkage. The parallel one ensures precise geometry along with high strength. On the downside, it is heavier compared to other linkages. And last but not least, the Haltenberger mechanism has superior strength and great flexibility (it can fit around other units).

Whether your car is equipped with a gearbox or steering gear and whatever linkage it has, all of its components should be built to withstand extreme racing conditions and operate at their peak. In case your steering arm, rod, link, or any other component is worn or damaged, it should be replaced without delay for you to race with complete confidence. Fortunately, the industry currently offers a wide range of aftermarket steering parts including center and drag links, tie rod ends, etc., all built to the highest standards of quality and durability.
