A spark plug consists of a shell, ceramic insulator, and electrodes. While the side electrode is connected to the shell, the center one is secured inside the ceramic casing. Depending on the material electrode ends are made from, there are several spark plug types such as copper, platinum, and iridium. Copper-tipped spark plugs are the most affordable ones in the industry, however, they need to be regularly replaced, after 20,000-50,000 miles. Their electrode has the largest diameter, thus they require more voltage to create the spark. Platinum spark plugs last much longer than copper ones, up to 100,000 miles, but they may overheat in certain conditions.
