Racing Safety Equipment

Any kind of racing requires extensive preparation. The car must be readied, the engine finely tuned, and the suspension tweaked for track conditions. But just as important as ensuring the car performs to its potential is making sure it’s set up so the driver is comfortable and in control, and that it’s fitted with the right gear so he can walk away in the event of a crash. A roll cage is a framework of tubing built within a race car to protect the driver in the event of a crash, especially in a rollover. With a properly designed and constructed roll cage, the car’s bodywork can be completely crushed in a crash while the driver remains uninjured. Roll cages are attached to the frame, which also serves to strengthen and improve the overall rigidity of the vehicle. We offer both bolt-together and weld-together roll cages and roll bars for many production vehicle based race cars as well as kits for custom applications. Here you’ll also find shock absorbing, closed cell foam roll bar padding, heavy-duty SFI rated and non-rated window nets with polypropylene webbing in a range of sizes and colors, window net mounting kits, and adjustable roll cage nets for a variety of applications.

Flammable liquid and hot powertrain parts are a volatile combination, and the presence of both makes fire an ever-present danger in a race car. But even if driver and crew members escape personal injury, expensive equipment can still be destroyed for lack of a quality fire extinguisher. You can be prepared with our dry chemical and Halotron fire extinguishers, which are both rated for extinguishing fires involving flammable liquids or gases and electrical fires. We offer fire extinguisher and bracket packages as well as separate extinguishers and extinguisher mounts. Fire caused by a crash is the worst case scenario, but nevertheless one where the driver can survive, and vehicle fire damage minimized if you’re equipped with a fire suppression system. We offer manually activated systems engaged by the driver pulling a cable or pushing a knob, and automatic systems that are engaged by a temperature sensor. These systems come with tubing and nozzles which, when activated, direct the chemical suppressant at the driver and fuel cell and/or engine compartment. Automatic systems have the advantage of activation even if the driver is unconscious.

Our racing seats are designed with ample side bolsters at the hips, kidney area, and shoulders to keep the driver in place and in control, regardless of the speed or direction. Besides the lateral support provided by the side bolsters, racing seats are also shaped to keep the driver in a comfortable, upright driving position. Racing seats are designed to enable the mounting of racing harnesses, and the most sophisticated racing seats can also accommodate head and neck restraint systems like the HANS device. We offer seats for all types of racing. In addition to the proper configuration for safety and support, our seats are lightweight, so the engine won’t have to push around excess pounds, yet strong and rigid enough to handle the shock and pounding typical of racing conditions. While specs will vary according to brand and seat model, in general racing seats are covered in non-slip, fire retardant fabric that is breathable and shock absorbing for comfort. Most racing seats are universal, but we offer vehicle specific seat brackets for most applications to ensure your seats are positioned properly and have a solid foundation.

Racing harnesses are a significant upgrade from the standard automotive 3-point seat belts. Racing harnesses have no slack in the shoulder belts, and typically have multiple attachment points to restrain and protect the driver in a high-speed crash. Although there are 3-point harnesses with a belt routed over each shoulder but with one attachment point, 4-point harnesses, with a lap belt and two shoulder belts are more common. 5-point harnesses add a belt between the legs to prevent the driver from “submarining” out from under the lap belt in a crash. 6-point harnesses include an additional belt at the same location, with the belts wrapped around the legs. 8-point harnesses have an additional belt over each shoulder. On most harnesses, all belts are connected to a single, quick-release latch that allows fast egress from the cockpit. Some harnesses are designed to be used with head and neck restraints like the HANS device. We offer racing harnesses for every type of competition that are SFI rated, FIA approved, and meet sanctioning body regulations.

A helmet is the most important piece of personal safety equipment and we carry only the best. They meet stringent standards for impact and flame resistance, yet are lightweight and comfortable, with ventilation systems and removable, washable liners. They’re available in both full and open-face versions, and with a variety of shield and visor styles. Some are available with clips to attach to a HANS device, to stabilize the head in the event of a crash, and some are set up for forced air ventilation systems. Besides a wide range of features, you also have a choice of colors and designs, as well as materials including carbon fiber.
