The Safari name not only was used by Pontiac to denote the standalone line of station wagons, but also was applied to several other station wagon models, including the Pontiac Catalina Safari, Custom Safari, etc. It first appeared in 1955 as a designation for Pontiac's version of the Chevy Nomad. They shared many mechanicals, but the Safari was given a longer wheelbase along with a unique bumper/grille and tailgate design created by Paul Gillan and more luxurious appointments. Starting in 1957, Pontiac started using this name for all of its station wagons. A top-of-the-line model, the Grand Safari, was available from 1971 to 1978. It was the largest vehicle in the Pontiac lineup. The Pontiac Safari was discontinued in 1989 due to the decrease in popularity of full-size station wagons.
