The Pontiac Phoenix was built over two generations, based on Chevy chassis and utilizing GM's X-body platform. The first gen encompassed 1977 – 1979 model years. It was a rear-wheel-drive car based upon the Chevy Nova. Released to replace Pontiac's Ventura, it shared many exterior styling details with its predecessor, except for the grille and headlights. Three engine options were offered, including a 2.5L 110-hp Iron Duke I4, Buick's 3.8L V6, and Chevy's 5.0L 140-hp V8. The second generation brought smaller size and a front-wheel drive layout. As for the driving force, the choice was made in favor of smaller engines. The first-gen 2.5L I4 engine was retained and a new 2.8L V6 engine option was added. In 1985, the production of this car was stopped to give way to a revived Grand Am.
