Before its official introduction as a standalone model in 1997, the Pontiac Montana was a trim package of another Pontiac minivan, the Trans Sport. The new trim level proved to be so popular that the management at Pontiac decided to produce the Montana as a separate lineup. The vehicle was built over two generations. The first generation minivans were powered by a 3.4L V6 with 185 hp directed through a 4-speed automatic transmission. An upper trim of the Pontiac Montana, the Thunder, featured leather upholstery, 16" chrome 5-spoke rims, improved ride and handling characteristics, etc. The second generation autos (unveiled in 2005) got a redesigned nose to resemble an SUV and an SV6 prefix. They received more powerful engines, 3.5L and 3.9L V6, capable of 200 hp and 240 hp respectively. The last Montana rolled off the assembly line in 2009.
