Debuted in 1992, the Nissan Altima was an intended replacement to the Bluebird (Stanza) line as a flagship compact car. Initially focused primarily on the North American market, the Altima was built at the native plant in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan and in Smyrna, Tennessee. Offered to customers as a 4-door sedan, the first and the second Altima iterations had one and only engine offered – the 2.4 L KA24DE I4 that could be matched with either a 5-speed manual or to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The third generation that appeared in 2001 differed notably. Built on the new FF-L platform, the car was larger, falling within the U.S. mid-size cars classification. The options list included three engines and four transmissions. Five years later, the fourth generation was released, manufactured until April 2012.
