It was established by Trevor Milton in 2014 and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Nikola has stepped out of the shadows in 2020 after announcing its first electric pickup truck model. Nikola is a pioneer in battery-powered heavy-duty commercial transportation. They develop and build all-electric and hydrogen-electric powertrains for Class 8 trucks; vehicles that run on batteries and hydrogen fuel cells; and a network of hydrogen fueling stations to support these vehicles. Hydrogen power is an advantage over electric power as it helps address many problems ensuring lighter weight, faster refueling, and an extended driving range. The company has several semi models under development, with the Nikola Tre being the first semi-trailer truck slated to reach production. Like other vehicles, it uses electricity as the main power source and can be upgraded with fuel-cell technology to be able to cover many more miles. This truck is built in partnership with Iveco and manufactured in Germany; two other semis, named the Nikola One and Two, are planned to be assembled at a plant in Arizona.

The Nikola Badger is the brand’s first foray into the electric pickup truck market. It is available as a pure BEV (battery-electric vehicle) and as an FCEV (fuel-cell electric vehicle). When running on electricity, the Badger is claimed to travel up to 300 miles, while a fuel-cell system extends the range to 600 miles in total. Equipped with powerful motors, the truck is expected to develop around 900 peak horsepower, tug up to 8,000 pounds worth of trailer, and get to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds.
