Back-up lights are activated when the transmission selector lever is placed in reverse, and controlled by a switch that could be mounted on the floor console, on the steering column, or on the transmission. This switch may be part of the neutral safety switch on automatic transmission vehicles. Fog lights are mounted low on the vehicle and the beam is focused to minimize reflection off of fog, for better driving visibility. The fog light switch may be a separate switch on the dash or also among the switches on the headlight stalk. Fog lights are usually only operational with the headlight switch in the parking lights or low beam position.

Courtesy lights illuminate the interior of the vehicle. The control switches are located in the door jambs and the lights are activated whenever a door is opened. Typically, there is also a position on the headlight switch that enables the driver to turn on the courtesy lights. Most vehicles have additional interior lighting in the form of map and reading lights, and these are usually controlled by switches adjacent to the light. Some instrument panel features like odometers are illuminated whenever the engine is running, while the gauge backlighting is normally activated by the headlight switch. The brightness of the instrument panel can be controlled by a rheostat, which is often part of the headlight switch but may be a separate control on the dash.
