The Jaguar company and, then the parent company, Ford needed a new model to take historically upper-crust British automotive marque into the mainstream. Previously a maker of large luxury and sports cars, the company targeted a compact saloon segment to compete with the BMW 3-Series. Neither Jaguar nor Ford had a suitable small platform. It was decided to base a new model on a modified version of the Ford CD132 platform, previously used in the 2000 Ford Mondeo. It was a revolutionary step for the brand when the Jaguar X-Type compact sedan debuted in the 2002 model year. It became the smallest of the Jaguar's sedan range and came as the only estate model.

The brand-new 2002 model shared the European Mondeo sedan platform, nevertheless it differed by its own styling, distinctive accessories, dimensions and came standard with the all-wheel drive versus Mondeo's front-wheel drive. The Jaguar X-Type competed either with BMW 3-Series or with the Acura TL and Audi A4. The vehicle was manufactured at the Jaguar Land Rover plant, England. All X-Type vehicles were produced with a 6-cylinder engine. The base model was powered by a 2.5-liter engine producing 194 hp with either manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic. The uplevel 3.0 model came with a 3.0-liter engine rated 231 hp and automatic transmission. The vehicle had the Sport Package, sport suspension and 17-inch wheels. The list of standard Jaguar X-Type parts included antilock four-wheel disc brakes, front side and curtain side airbags. The antiskid system, climate control, navigation system and xenon headlamps were optional Jaguar X-Type accessories.

In 2003 the Jaguar X-Type was offered with the front wheel drive and the 2.0-liter V6 petrol engine. The Ford Duratorg ZSD 4-cylinder diesel engine was introduced by Jaguar for the first time. The 17-inch wheels replaced 16-inch wheels as standard for regular 3.0 models. The interior was furnished with new Jaguar accessories, leather and wood trim. The standard Jaguar X-Type parts were xenon headlamps, navigation system, front seats heating. Optional were sunroof, split-folded rear seats, trip computer, and other items. In 2004 the X-Type was presented as an estate version, known as the sport wagon in North America. It became the second ever Jaguar estate car. The list of standard Jaguar X-Type parts included sunroof, automatic headlights, steering wheel wrapped with wood/lather and split folding rear seats. The 18-inch wheels came in the Sport Package. The 2.5 sedan still had 16-inch wheels, and the 17-inch wheels were included in the Sport Package. In 2005 the Jaguar X-Type was offered as a sport wagon. It featured Jaguar's classic exterior styling hues, oval headlights, a rectangular grille and an elegantly arched roof. The 2.5-liter V6 engine was no longer available. All-wheel drive was always standard. The sport wagon provided more rear headroom and up to 50 cubic feet of storage space compared with the sedan. The sedan was offered with 17-inch wheels and a split folding rear seat. In 2008 the vehicle got a face-lift, which included a revised bodywork, redesigned front and rear bumpers, new grille and rear lights. The engine range included 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter petrol engines, 2.2 liter and 2.0-liter diesels. In 2009 the production of X-Type was discontinued.

The Jaguar X-Type is the first luxury saloon in its class. This model demonstrates comfort ride and elegant style.
