Precision Turbo & Engine

The Short Version: After years of the Gen 2 Sportsman being the brand’s best-performing street/race turbo, Precision just released the Next Gen Sportsman 8685. Rated at up to 1,800 horsepower, this multi-class legal turbo is more efficient, flows more air, and pumps out more power than the competition, but it also costs around $5,000 depending on the configuration.

Any devoted drag racer or performance enthusiast can tell you that Precision Turbo and Engine is one of the biggest names in the market when it comes to aftermarket turbochargers. Some of the fastest race cars in the world run Precision equipment, and the brand just released its newest model, the Next Gen Sportsman 8685.

The Sportsman has been Precision’s top street/race turbo for years, so seeing the next-generation model debut immediately caught my eye. This turbo utilizes Precision’s Competition Engineered Aerodynamics technology to machine an advanced compressor wheel from 2618 aluminum. This wheel provides 15% more airflow, better efficiency at high pressures, and is designed to spool faster than other similarly sized turbos. In short, this bad boy is made to handle plenty of boost, and it’s rated up to 1,800 horsepower.

The new Sportsman 8685 is undoubtedly an amazing turbo, but its price is geared towards the most serious racing enthusiasts. Depending on the turbine housing and area over radius (A/R) ratio, this turbo costs $4,822 - $5,034. If you’re not ready to drop that much on a new turbo or you don’t need something rated for 1,800 hp, there are more affordable options to consider.

Precision offers a Gen 2 PT7675 rated at 1,300 hp for $2,886 or something smaller like a Gen 1 PT6766 for $1,464 that can handle 935 hp. Outside of Precision, brands like Borg Warner and Garrett offer reliable options and competitive pricing. I personally have a Borg Warner S480 on my drag car now, and I’m excited to see what kind of power it puts down.

I have been obsessed with all things automotive since I was a kid, and this passion led me to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. While obtaining my master’s degree in ME from Miami University, I worked as a technician at a local shop for seven years while building my own drag car, learning the ins and outs of vehicle performance, diagnostics, and repair.
