The Short Version: The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering is one of the top events during Monterey Car Week. It’s an upscale event featuring world-class cars, food, wine, and experiences. Some of the highlights of this year’s The Quail include Koenigsegg’s 30th anniversary, the 50th birthday of the Porsche 911 Turbo, a tribute to world rally cars, and a century of production from MG.

Monterey Car Week is less than a month away, and enthusiasts from all over the place will be heading to California in short order. While there are shows, auctions, races, and other events happening every day starting on August 9, one of the highlights is sure to be this year’s The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering on the 16th. Set to feature more than 200 cars from the past, present, and future, The Quail will be headlined by a one-of-one Koenigsegg race car, some Porsche 911 Turbos, a couple of championship-winning Lancia rally cars, an MG from the 1930s, and more.

Koenigsegg has been arguably the top hypercar manufacturer since its inception in 1994, and The Quail will celebrate the brand’s 30th anniversary. The first-ever Koenigsegg racecar will highlight the event, a 2007 CCGT GT1 Competition Coupé, but it won’t be alone. The Swedish carmaker is also bringing a 2005 CCR to the event, which holds a special place as the first Koenigsegg to ever grace U.S. soil.

The hypercar company won’t be the only brand celebrating its birthday, with Porsche purists gathering to prepare for the 50th anniversary of the 911 Turbo next year. When it debuted in 1975, the original Porsche 911 Turbo was the fastest German production car ever made. To this day, the 911 line as a whole remains one of the most sought-after cars on the market for enthusiasts that can afford them. Porsche is bringing a slew of 911s to The Quail this year, including the only classic Turbo ever produced without the easily recognizable whale-tail rear spoiler.

The other two featured classes this year are Tribute to World Rally Cars and 100 Years of MG. Two of the top rally cars of all time will make an appearance at The Quail, including a 1983 Lancia Abart 037 that won the ‘83 Monte Carlo Rally, notably the last rear-wheel drive vehicle to pull it off. To celebrate a century of MG, the British automaker is bringing a 1937 SA Reinbolt and Christé, the only one left in existence.

In addition to these four main classes, The Quail has something for everyone. Well, everyone who can swing it. The upscale event is essentially a massive lawn party with some of the world’s nicest, most unique cars. Plus, there are five gourmet food pavilions along with world-class wine. Count me in.

I have been obsessed with all things automotive since I was a kid, and this passion led me to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. While obtaining my master’s degree in ME from Miami University, I worked as a technician at a local shop for seven years while building my own drag car, learning the ins and outs of vehicle performance, diagnostics, and repair.
