Product Details

Big Hoss Intake Manifold by Banks®. A Banks Racing product proven in the Banks Duramax Sidewinder S-10 diesel drag truck, the Big Hoss Intake Manifold is the only purpose-built manifold for the Duramax. Big Hoss replaces the factory's crude clamshell intake with a tuned 16-port manifold assembly that provides tremendous flow and uniform air distribution for more available power at a given boost level.

Notes

  • Shown with optional boost tube.

Includes

  • Intake manifold and mounting hardware
  • Boost hose
  • clamps and retention hardware
  • Dipstick tube and wire loom relocation hardware

Features

  • Dual runners for each cylinder
  • Greatly enlarged intake area
  • Smooth transitions for high flow
  • O-ring seal to head
  • Develops more power at lower manifold pressures

The secret to any engine's power output is air flow, but it's particularly important for big-horsepower diesels because they ingest enormous amounts of air to combine with energy-rich diesel fuel. Sure, you can cram a lot of air in with a big turbo and lots of boost, but that comes at the expense of high exhaust gas temperatures, poor throttle response, annoying turbo lag and mediocre economy. A properly-set-up diesel will pay as much attention to low restrictions, smooth bends and appropriate port size as any normally-aspirated engine should.

And that's right where most OEM diesel intakes fall short. Packaging constraints, emissions requirements, penny-pinching by bean-counters, assembly-line expediency and just plain laziness on the part of Detroit's engineers make most OEM diesel intakes as hard for a molecule of oxygen to navigate as a pitch-dark corn maze is for a sugar-crazed six-year old.

This manifold does away with ALL of the factory short comings. It has individual intake runners (2 per cylinder), a much larger intake area, very smooth transitions from the chamber to the port, o-ring seals, and has a drastically higher flow rate over stock. This design will allow you to deliver far higher volumes of air to your cylinder heads (and take better advantage of your port work) without having to run sky high boost pressures.

It's nearly pointless to port and polish a stock diesel head, because the initial design is so restrictive. Big Hoss manifolds require machining off substantial portions of the factory cylinder head and tossing out all of the intake system between the turbo and the manifold. It's a big commitment, but the payoff is the potential of doubling the engine's horsepower and torque. Sorry, that means racing applications only, not legal for street use.
