We’re not going to dispute this wisdom, but did you ever consider that the oil filter may not be the filter that’s most crucial for engine lifespan? The oil filter removes dirt and other contaminants that are already in the engine from the engine oil supply, but it’s the air filter that prevents dirt and contaminants from getting into the engine. The air filter traps dirt and debris that would damage internal engine parts and in so doing, makes the oil filter’s job easier. But the air filter’s effectiveness depends on the integrity of the air filter box and other components of the air intake system. If any of them are compromised, dirty unfiltered air could make its way into the engine, with possibly very expensive consequences. A typical engine consumes huge quantities of air, as much as 10,000 gallons for every one gallon of gasoline, and it must ingest this air under all kinds of driving conditions. As you drive down the road, air that contains dirt, dust, sand, debris, leaves and other organic matter, and particulate from exhaust, is drawn into your vehicle’s air intake system. If these contaminants were to make their way into the engine, they would abrade and prematurely wear pistons, rings, and cylinder walls, and valves and valve seats, gradually eroding the engine and its level of performance.

These contaminants, along with metal particles abraded away by them, can eventually make their way into the engine oil in the crankcase. The oil pump draws the oil through the oil sump pickup and sends it to the oil filter before it’s distributed throughout the engine. But an oil filter can only hold a finite amount of dirt and contaminants, and if it becomes clogged, under the theory that dirty lubricant is better than none at all, its internal bypass valve will open and allow dirty oil to circulate throughout the engine, eventually damaging bearings and other components and finally destroying the entire engine. This is why an effective air filter is so critical to the health of an engine.

The replacement air filters we offer protect your engine by trapping contaminant particles as small as 5 microns, which is 5 millionths of a meter or less than 1/10th the size of a human hair. But this level of protection is meaningless if the air filter doesn’t seal properly to the air box or air cleaner housing, or if there are any cracks, gaps, breakage or any type of damage in the air intake tract that would create openings where unfiltered air could bypass the filter and flow into the engine. These openings can also adversely affect performance on some fuel injected vehicles.

In the air intake duct just beyond the air filter box on most fuel injected vehicles is the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. The MAF sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine and signals this information to the engine control computer. The computer uses this information, along with input from other sensors, to control fuel injector pulse width (injector on time) and achieve the correct air/fuel mixture. However, if the air intake system is compromised at any point between the MAF sensor and combustion chambers, air unaccounted for by the MAF sensor could enter the engine. This would create a lean condition because there would not be enough fuel to mix at the proper ratio with the additional air.
