When Volkswagen introduced its first Golf in 1974 to replace the Beetle, it was an instant success. Since that time many changes have taken place, many improvements have been made. Loved for its spacious interior, impressive fuel efficiency, and refined on-road composure, the Golf has long been one of the best-selling compact hatchbacks. The 2020 model year marks the birth of the all-new eighth-generation Golf. Coming with an upgraded version of the impressively versatile MQB modular platform under the skin, it incorporates new, more lightweight materials, thus saving weight. Unlike its predecessor, the 2020 Golf boasts a sharper design and a suite of tech features typically available in luxury vehicles. For those who’re looking to accessorize their vehicle and make it truly theirs, we’ve carefully selected best-in-class 2020 Volkswagen Golf accessories and parts.
Although it’s still recognizable as a member of the Golf family, the hatch has undergone numerous dramatic changes, including the discontinuation of the three-door model, and became more digital. To that end, VW designers have greatly reduced the number of dials, switches, buttons, etc. to help the iconic Golf achieve a cleaner, more tailored look. As a result, drivers can use either the digital center console screen or the buttons on the steering wheel to adjust the vehicle’s settings. A 10.25-inch screen for instruments and an 8.25-inch display for the infotainment are standard. The newcomer supports Car2X technology, which enables vehicles to communicate with each other using radio frequencies and recognize surrounding objects like traffic signs and lights. The optional Travel Assist bundle of driver assistance electronics includes the system that can aid in steering, braking, and speeding up at highway speeds.
In total, more than 10 powertrains are available for different markets. The car adopts three versions of a cost-effective 48V mild-hybrid system that makes it possible to coast with the engine switched off, thereby saving fuel and lower emissions. Two plug-in hybrid options are offered as well, equipped with 13-kWh batteries providing 201 or 241 hp. Gasoline-fed Golfs are powered by different versions of turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinders and 1.5-liter I4s. Their outputs range from 89 hp to 148 hp. The diesel-powered Golf employs a 2.0-liter four in two states of tune producing 114 or 148 horsepower.
The 2020 year model is offered in four trims, which include Golf, Life, Style and R-Line. Even the base model comes with LED lights, digital gauges, forward collision mitigation, lane keep assist, and Car2X capability. The highlights of the Life are more customization opportunities and wireless connectivity, while the Style adds sport seats, better LED lighting, and electronic driver aids. The R-Line lets the driver feel the sporty side of the Golf through performance upgrades, while looking more aggressive inside and out. The eighth-generation Golf is a smart choice for those drivers who want to own a practical car with nice driving manners.
