Racing Motor Mounts

The majority of cars roll off the assembly lines equipped with rubber motor mounts. They do quite a good job dampening NVH levels for comfortable daily driving, but ride softness is at odds with what racing enthusiasts strive for. Rubber and hydraulic mounts allow for unwanted driveline lash, which means part of the torque produced by the engine gets absorbed by a soft material or fluid instead of being sent to the wheels. If your priorities are performance upgrades and handling precision, swapping for stiffer mounts should be on your list of mods.

Performance-enhancing motor mounts are typically made from polyurethane. They don’t allow as much flex as softer mounts, which translates into improved powerplant response, better acceleration, less chance of wheel hop, and more power put to the ground. However, this comes at a cost. Increased stiffness causes more vibration and additional noise in the cabin. Your choice of the right racing motor mounts depends on the vehicle, its intended use, and your personal preferences as to how much harshness and vibration is acceptable for the sake of performance benefits. Aside from reducing power loss, poly mounts are more durable than their rubber counterparts. They are less susceptible to dry rotting, cracking, and tearing while being resistant to heat and aggressive substances like coolant and road salt. Many racing applications require the use of solid engine mounts. They are made from steel with no rubber or polyurethane used, which means minimized twist under load and the highest amount of horsepower put directly to the track surface. Their use is typically limited to high-horsepower track applications due to high levels of noise, vibration, and harshness.
