The M151 was a new essential chapter in the story of the U.S. Jeeps. Taking into consideration that some M151 A2 vehicles were in the U.S. military service in 1999, the M151 Jeeps achieved a longer run than the previous M-series all together. In March 1951, Ford Motor Company started developing a Military Utility Tactical Truck (MUTT), a new Jeep that first wore the XM 151 designation. The Ford engineers intended to make a new model lighter, easy to maintain, and capable to move through the roughest terrain. Ford began mass production of the model called the M151 in 1960 and the vehicle was supposed to replace the Korean War Jeeps. Later, the M151 was built by Kaiser, AM General Corporation, and GM up to 1972. The M151 was the principal combat Jeep of the Vietnam war, fully entrenched in service. Although the M151 resembled its predecessors, had the same basic layout and approximately the same dimensions, it actually had a completely new design. Just like its forerunners, the M151 offered room for four people and some equipment. However, unlike previous Jeeps, this vehicle had monocoque design and incorporated an independent suspension with coil springs. Also it was longer, wider and more spacious than previous Jeeps while retaining light weight.
