The 2020 Mercedes GLS Class can be powered with one of two gasoline engines – a GLS 450 turbocharged inline-six motor producing 367 hp or a GLS 580 twin-turbo V8 engine making 489 hp. The model comes standard with a 9-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC AWD. Both powerplants use the EQ Boost mild-hybrid system that can add up to 22 hp to the output. It works in conjunction with a 48-volt electric system that includes a starter-generator extending the gas mileage to 23.5 mpg. The range of diesel motors is not available for the U.S. market at this point. The E-Active Body Control suspension system greatly improves handling, especially during cornering, and can even assist in crossing mud or sand pits.
