In the late 1950s, when Volkswagen has been establishing itself as a world-class manufacturer of cars, it became clear that it was necessary to introduce a new, larger car to supplement the Beetle, the Transporter and the Type I Karmann Ghia. Therefore, the company threw all efforts into manufacturing a new model. However, the development of a new car was held in secret, even when pre-production cars were tested and VW began getting ready for production. Only in 1961, VW officially announced that a new model line was on the way. The new model was available in 3 body configurations. One of them, the Squareback, has been produced since 1962 but reached the US shores only in 1966. Built on the Beetle's 94.5-inch wheelbase, it retained an air-cooled rear-engine, but also had notable differences. The new car boasted an advanced cooling system, had more space inside, and offered practicality and cutting-edge style.
