One of Volkswagen's staunchest offerings, the Phaeton is a full-size sedan that was initially unveiled at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. The model first became available throughout most of Europe and the Middle East beginning for the 2003 model year before being released in North American a year later. Eventually, the Volkswagen Phaeton made its way onto dealer lots in South Korea (2006). It is constructed off of Volkswagen's D1 platform along with the Bentley Continental and the Bentley Flying Spur, but it also shares several powertrain characteristics with the Audi A8. As for the vehicle's dimensions, the Volkswagen Phaeton measured in with a wheelbase of 113.4 inches (long wheelbase version - 118.1 inches), a width of 74.9 inches, a height of 57.1 inches, and an overall length of 199 inches (long wheelbase version - 203.7 inches).

At its launch in North America, the Volkswagen Phaeton offered two engine options: a 4.2L V8 and 6.0L W12. The 4.2L V8 engine made for approximately 335 horsepower directed through a standard six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability. The bolder, more powerful 6.0L V12 started off pumping out 420 horsepower geared to a five-speed automatic transmission with available manual shifting (for 2006 the hp would be increased to 444). All-wheel drive was included standard on both powertrains. Wood trim accents, chrome trim, and leather upholstery are just some of the highlights inside the model. Technologically, VW implemented a vehicle management system with a 7" color screen that works with the navigation, trip computer, stereo, and climate control.

In the US, one long wheelbase body style was offered. All variants of the Phaeton were outfitted with four-zone automatic climate control, xenon HID headlights, heated windshield wiper nozzles, a sunroof, and ten-speaker stereo system with a six-CD disc changer. The V8 version of the Volkswagen Phaeton showed off 17" alloy wheels, 12-way power front-seats, four-way power-adjustable lumbar supports, a leather wrapped steering wheel, self-dimming mirrors, rear sunshades, and stainless steel pedals. The Phaeton V12 displayed 18" alloy wheels, distinctive walnut wood trim, a premium 12-speaker stereo system, tinted windows, heated seats (front and rear), and 18-way power-adjustable front seats (with massage).
