Since rubber is rather sensitive to air temperature, this factor plays a huge role when choosing the right tires. Summer tires provide the finest performance on the road when the temperature is higher than 40 °F approximately, i.e. during a warm season. Their all-season counterparts are more versatile; their tread pattern combines some features of summer and winter rubber, and they are oriented on a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions including light frost and snow. Should your locality be known for really low temperatures and snowfalls, winter tires are the finest option. All-terrain tires are great for off-roaders, as they provide a better grip on muddy and rocky trails.
Understanding Tires
There is a lot of information on the sidewall of a tire. Typically, you'll find UTQG ratings for treadwear, traction and temperature, the size of the tire, the load rating index number with a speed rating index, the construction type (bias or radial), the D.O.T. compliance code, and construction details. On some tires used as original equipment, you may also find a marking that indicates its OE status.
