The SSI brand has a loyal following in the Porsche 911 community. Stainless Steel Innovations is best known for its heat exchangers made to last the lifespan of the vehicle they’re installed on or even outlast it. The service life this long and the build this tough came from the all-304 stainless steel construction of SSI Porsche heat exchangers that ensures high resistance to corrosion, as opposed to lower-quality 409 stainless steel used by the competition. Originally a U.S. company established in California in 1976, SSI changed hands in 2013 and became part of the JP Group a/s family of brands, which moved production to Denmark. Heat exchangers are exhaust system components of the Porsche 911 responsible not only for channeling exhaust flow out of the engine but for warming up the cabin as well. The parts originally installed on Porsches were a common failure point due to their relatively low resistance to corrosion. Salt, condensation, and water caused them to rust, while engine oil dripping on hot heat exhchangers led to internal grime buildup. Reasonably-priced new replacements or good used parts were hard to find, so SSI heat exchangers were the answer.

Their estimated service life in highly aggressive environments where road salt is used is 20-30 years. The construction of tubing is resistant to internal corrosion caused by acids and other combustion by-products, reducing the possibility of carbon monoxide leaks to a minimum. The tubes are mandrel bent to precise tolerances to eliminate internal serrations and increase exhaust flow. The design of heat exchangers reduces intake charge disturbances at valve overlap to further increase gas velocity, boosting power at low and mid RPM.
