The Chieftain was produced from 1949 to 1958. It was actually one of the first all-new car designs in the post-World War II period. The first-generation Chieftain was a smaller and more affordable model compared to its predecessor, the Pontiac Torpedo. The Chieftain was based on the A-platform and was available in several body styles such as a coupe, sedan, convertible, and station wagon. The first-generation Chieftain featured some interesting optional items like a radio with seven vacuum tubes, under seat heaters, Remington Auto-Home shaver, etc. ’49 Chieftains came with a choice of engines available from 90 up to 106 horsepower. The Chieftain was largely unchanged from 1952 and came with a standard 6-cylinder engine. As for the 1954 model, it included power brakes and A/C as extra cost options.
The second-generation Pontiac Chieftain featured a completely new chassis, body and Pontiac’s first V8 engine making 173 or 180 horsepower, depending on the version. A six-cylinder engine was no longer available. Later on, the engine was drastically enlarged, and horsepower jumped to 192 and 205 respectively. 1957 Chieftains offered new “Star Flight” styling and included missile-shaped side trim, extended rear fenders, lower hoods, massive bumpers, and so on. Once again, the engine was enlarged, and horsepower was increased to 290. In 1958, the Chieftain went through another major change; it was given honeycomb grilles, concave rear fenders, quad headlights and tail lights, etc. The V8 engine grew again and was capable of 240-270 horsepower, depending on the version.
