The Mercury Carpi is a model which was offered on the North American market in different periods during three decades. The first-gen Capri was manufactured between 1971 and 1977. Some editions of the Capri were imported from Europe (they were made by the European division of Ford), and this model was the best-selling imported car in North America (after the Volkswagen Beetle). The Mercury Carpi was very popular thanks to its style, performance, and relative affordability. The second generation of the model, produced between 1979 and 1986, shared the same body and powertrains with the Ford Mustang, just the front and rear ends had some differences to distinguish these cars.
