The Mercedes CL Class is a performance-oriented luxury coupe that first premiered for the 1992 model year. At its debut, the CL Class was offered as the 500 SEC and the 600 SEC, with the engine configurations being each model’s defining attribute. The 500 SEC was outfitted with a 5.0L V8 engine capable of approximately 315 horsepower while the 600 SEC pumped out up to 389 horsepower using a V12, becoming the first Mercedes coupe to do so. Both engines were mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. A couple years in, the CL Class’s trims were renamed the S500 and S600, respectively, but by the end of the decade, the "CL" entered the title, and the models became known as the CL500 and the CL600.

The next generation of the Mercedes CL Class rolled off the line in 2000. Initially, the only model available was the CL500, which this time around was powered by a 302 horsepower V8 engine. But following close on its heels was the re-emergence of the V12 CL600 as well as the new CL55 AMG, which showcased 354 horsepower in its own right. In 2001, Active Body Control and adaptive cruise control were implemented into the CL Class. 2003 saw the CL600 turbocharged and the CL55 AMG supercharged, with both producing a hefty 493 horsepower. A year later, a seven-speed automatic transmission became standard inside the CL500. DVD navigation and 18" wheels also started being offered as options. For 2006, the AMG Sport Package, which showcased such Mercedes parts as the distinctive bumpers, side sills, and 18" wheels, became standard equipment.

2007 welcomed in the arrival of the CL550, which featured a 5.5L V8 engine that delivered up to 382 horsepower along with 391 pounds-per-foot of torque directed through a seven-speed automatic transmission. CL600 models showed off the twin-turbo V12 that churned out 510 horsepower and 612 pounds-per-foot of torque geared to a five-speed automatic transmission. At the top of the ladder was the CL63 AMG, whose 6.3L V8 produced up to 518 horsepower and 465 pounds-per-foot of torque. In 2008, Mercedes introduced an even more powerful engine configuration with the CL65. Equipped with a 6.0l twin-turbo V12, the CL65 gets credit for a whopping 604 horsepower and 738 pounds-per-foot of torque, easily among the top numbers in its class.
