Lightweight and maneuverable, the Mazda 3 has always been known for its fun-to-drive character provided by a 2.0L or 2.3L engine. In the first-gen cars, these motors featured multi-point fuel injection (MPI), but afterward, the automaker shifted to more effective gasoline direct-injection (GDI) systems allowing for providing better control over the air-fuel mixture. Unlike the injectors used in MPI setups, those employed in GDI are designed for much higher pressure and feature a different construction. Their long nozzles slightly protrude into the combustion chamber, which makes them prone to carbon buildup and clogging over time.

Like their MPI counterparts, GDI injectors have their own seals, and if you're going to remove the injector to clean or replace it, make sure you install new seals, as these components are not reusable. Actually, new seals are needed even if your repair job doesn't concern the injectors but includes the removal of the intake manifold or cylinder head. As for MPI injectors, they usually have a longer lifespan, yet they are easier to remove, clean, and install back, although replacing their seals is also recommended.
