“To create the very best from the very best” – this maxim, once declared by Wilhelm Maybach to be the basis for his work, is embodied in every Maybach vehicle. Maybach-Manufaktur was founded on 23 March, 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach, one of Germany's first automotive engineers, and Count Zeppelin as a subsidiary of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH and was itself known as Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau-GmbH (Aircraft Engine Building Company). Wilhelm Maybach's son, Karl, worked as a technical director of Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH. In 1918, the company's name was changed to Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH (Maybach Engine Construction Company). The company originally designed and manufactured diesel and petrol engines for rigid airships known as Zeppelins, and its Maybach Mb.Iva was used in the aircraft and airships of World War I. Together with his son, Wilhelm Maybach crafted the very first Maybach automobile in 1919.

Based on the Mercedes-Benz chassis, the W1 was an experimental project designed to give Maybach the opportunity to test-drive a few of his engineering concepts. A couple of years later, in 1921, the engineer developed this prototype into a vehicle intended for public use – the Maybach W3, which was introduced as a production model at the Berlin Motor Show. Other models followed. The DS8 Zeppelin is one of the best-known Maybachs, powered by a 200-horsepower V12 and capable of reaching a top speed of 93 mph. The company's 1936 limousine, the SW 38, offered luxurious, comfortable seats for seven passengers via five standard and two folding seats. Between 1921 and 1940, the company manufactured a variety of opulent Maybachs, now regarded as classics. During the World War II, the production of Maybach vehicles ceased as the company shifted its focus to manufacturing diesel engines for military, marine, and rail purposes.

After the WW II, the automotive production wasn't restarted. In 1960, Daimler AG purchased Maybach, but the company was mainly used to make special editions of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the W108 and W116 model range. In 1997, Daimler decided to revive the production of Maybach vehicles and presented a luxury concept car at the 1997 Tokyo Motorshow. The production model was introduced in two sizes – the Maybach 57 and the Maybach 62, reflecting the lengths of the sedans in decimetres. In 2005, the 57S was added, powered by a 6.0L V12 engine producing 603 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Two years later, the Maybach 62 Landaulet was unveiled, featuring a sliding soft roof that allows back seat passengers to take sun baths from the comfort of their seats. Standard features of all Maybach models include, but are not limited to, a navigation system with voice recognition, A/C with 4-zone climate controls, power rear sunshade, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, front and rear seat massage, 21-speaker premium sound system, power panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, premium leather upholstery, rearview camera, iPod adapter, wireless cell phone link, universal garage door opener, and night vision.

Maybach became a staple of popular culture, with its name being synonymous with luxury and exclusivity.
