Constructed on the same platform as the Nissan Pathfinder, the Infiniti QX4 arrived for the 1997 model year, giving the Japanese luxury marque its first entrant in the emerging luxury SUV segment. In Japan, the vehicle was known as the Nissan Terran Regulus while it was badged as the QX4 for the North American market. At its launch, the Infiniti QX4 was outfitted with a 3.3L V6 engine which provided 168 horsepower along with 196 pounds-per-foot of torque. The QX4 also included an advanced four-wheel drive system, which was another distinction between it and the Pathfinder. As for the model’s dimensions, the Infiniti QX4 measured in with a wheelbase of 106.3 inches, a width of 72.4 inches, a height of 70.7 inches, and an overall length of 183.9 inches (decreased to 183.1 inches for 2001). The QX4 displayed 8.3 inches of ground clearance, which allowed it to be used in certain off-road situations.

2001 welcomed in a semi-significant redesign of the Infiniti QX4 parts, as the engine configuration received a sizable boost up to 240 horsepower thanks to a new. 3.5L VQ V6. Several changes were made to the exterior accessories of the Infiniti QX4, as well, as xenon HID headlights along with 17" alloy wheels were added. Inside the QX4, new accents and an integrated analog clock were the main additions. A year later, Nissan gave the Infiniti QX4 several techno-savvy parts and features including Intelligent Cruise Control. The ICC system used special laser sensors which automatically sped-up or slowed-down the vehicle according to the distance detected from cars ahead. The interior accessories got a refresher as well, with the audio system being upgraded and a new leather-wrapped wood steering wheel implemented.

A slew of changes were introduced to the Infiniti QX4 parts for 2003, including side-curtain airbags being made standard. Other additions to the standard-equipment list were 17" alloy wheels, a driver-seat memory system, and a leather-wrapped wood steering wheel which housed audio controls. Additional options, such as heated front-rear seats, a power moonroof, and a rear DVD-entertainment system, could also be had. Following the 2003 model year, Nissan discontinued the QX4 (the vehicle would wind up being replaced in the lineup by the QX56). However, the QX4 was a success for the automaker, as it provided Infiniti with a worthy competitor to the offerings from Lexus, Mercedes, and the like. The Infiniti QX4 was named a Best Bet by the Car Book (2000) and was nominated to Car and Driver’s Ten Best List (2001). Edmunds.com defined the QX4 as a “capable and luxurious truck with a powerful engine, excellent on-road manners, and a low base price" (2003).

The Infiniti QX4 is a true noisemaker that shook up the world of midsize SUVs. With more exterior style and design than most in its class, more recent series have stepped it up with the now standard inclusion of xenon HID headlights and upgraded dash controls that are truly "high-tech." The interior features enough room to store a good amount of cargo or chauffer the family around without compromising the overall texture of the ride. For the drivers who enjoy a luxurious look but want a good amount of space and comfort, the QX4 delivers in a big, big way.
