Originally a subcompact hatchback built for Europe, Japan, and Australasia, the Honda City has been conquering other markets globally since the introduction of its third generation in 1996, primarily offered as a 4-door sedan. It was received fairly well when it debuted back in 1981, boasting a number of industry awards and honors by automotive media. Though it was challenging for the vehicle to compete with such powerful rivals as the Ford Escort and Opel Astra, the City became one of the best-selling sedans in developing markets in a very short span. The classic low-slung design of the third-generation Honda City was partially inspired by the Civic. It was also one of the very first sedans to provide variable valve timing technology - Honda’s VTEC, introduced in 2000. The next-gen City was unveiled in 2003 and was totally different from its predecessor in terms of driving dynamics and style. The sedan was softer and taller, offering a much better sense of space inside, and featured the new i-DSI gasoline engine. Honda also launched the City ZX model in 2005 with a 1.5 liter i-VTEC engine.

The fifth-gen Honda City, which appeared in 2008, was the most powerful model since it came with the revolutionary i-VTEC engine. In 2017, the Honda City received a mid-cycle update, getting such additional features as a larger infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, a revised chrome grille, and extremely powerful LED headlights and tail lights.
