The Ford Taunus was a general name for a line of family cars with small and medium engine capacity, produced by the German subsidiary of Ford from 1939 to 1942 and from 1948 to 1982. There were a few different series of these cars that had their own designations. The first Taunus models were built on the Ford Eifel platform, they used a similar engine although had a longer chassis, streamlined body, and featured first hydraulic brakes among Ford models. Because of the war, the production was interrupted from 1942 to 1948. In 1952, the Taunus M-series was introduced. It was divided into smaller line (12M, 15M models) and bigger line (17M, 20M, 26M models) of automobiles. The letter "M" referred to “Masterpiece” and the preceding number corresponded to the engine capacity. A notable fact is that the Taunus bore the Cologne coat of arms as an emblem for the most of its history. Ford badge was applied to these cars only since 1964.
