The new Fiat 124 Spider marked the rebirth of a classic roadster, the Pininfarina-designed Fiat 124 Sport Spider that arrived in showrooms in 1966. The modern interpretation of an iconic car, manufactured in collaboration with Mazda, debuted at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2017 model year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original model. In fact, it was a reworked Mazda Miata MX-5 inside and out, borrowing its architecture and styling cues, with unique Fiat's engine range and sheet metal. Fiat took all that Mazda developed to the next level, adding an Italian flair and more dynamics to Japanese detailing, functional features, and the simplicity of form. The front fascia is purely Fiat's, designed after the look of the original car of the 1960s with its round headlights and flattened hexagonal grille.

The driving force is a 1.4L four-cylinder 160-hp turbo engine borrowed from Fiat’s 500 Abarth and altered for longitudinal installation. It is paired with a standard 6-speed manual transmission delivering power to the rear wheels (this was the first time this powertrain was used in a rear-wheel drive car), while a 6-speed automatic is made available as an option. A four-wheel independent suspension (double wishbone in the front and multilink in the rear) improves steering response and provides a good level of comfort. With the exception of Fiat's own suspension calibrations, brakes, and electrically assisted steering system, the specifications largely coincide with Mazda's. The Fiat 124 Spider proudly rolls on 16-inch silver-finished aluminum wheels with performance tires, also shared with the MX-5.

Inside, soft-touch materials, distinctive satin-chrome and leather accents, and high-end technology make the car as excellent as outside. The optional Fiat Connect 7.0 infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen display, six speakers, and Bluetooth hands-free kit keeps the driver connected to the world and enhances driving experience. The safety equipment includes steel frame with crumple zones engineered to absorb and redirect energy in case of an accident, four airbags, and the available driver assist systems such as Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection.
